Emery & Ella Hisel Valley Retreat is a small family-owned and operated vacation get-a-way, offering good ole southern hospitality amid the tranquility and beauty of rural Appalachia. Read about our winter special below! Our cottages are located at the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. We are approximately 23 miles due east of Berea, Kentucky. Berea is well known for its arts and crafts, and is home to a craft fesitval held each year in July. This festival draws thousands of people from all over the United States, who bring their homemade crafts for sale, and purchase crafts made by local artisians. Berea has several antique stores and other craft stores for your shopping enjoyment. Berea is located at exit 76 on I-75 and has several nice home town restuarants and fast food dining. Our first cottage was completed in 2002 and sits on a hilltop above the newest cottage which was just completed in the summer of 2006. Both cottages are fully furnished and contain everything one would need right down to the silverware. They are also both non-smoking and we ask that guests respect this rule. Some additional amenities include; telephone, satellite TV, VCR and DVD players, as well as an assortment of VHS and DVD titles for your viewing pleasure. The cottage on top of the hill has two bedrooms and one full bath. It has a wonderful front porch for sitting and soaking in the scenery. The rear patio has a grill and seating for four or more if you desire, and a five person hot tub spa for your enjoyment. The feel of the cottage is very open inside with the living room, dining room, and kitchen all being adjoined with a vaulted ceiling. In the rear of the cottage there is also a sun room, great for reading a book, with access to the back patio and hot tub spa. The bedrooms are comfortable and have quite a bit of southern charm in their decor. Our second cottage is just over the hill from the first cottage and contains two spacious bedrooms and two full bathrooms. The cottage also contains a front porch and a small rear deck. The rear deck houses a beautiful view of the trees and is great for relaxing, drinking morning coffee, smoking, or just watching nature. Inside, the cottage also maintains an open feel as the living room, kitchen, and dining room share a center island that houses a fireplace, food-pantry, and breakfast bar. Inside the living room there is a remote-controlled gas fireplace and satelite Direct TV with a brand new RCA 42" LCD HDTV. It's the perfect place for relaxing with a book or watching the big game. Both bedrooms are ample enough to be considered master bedrooms by most modern standards and have access to high-speed wireless internet. This cottage now has a large outside deck with a six person hot tub spa, and is very relaxing tubbing during cold weather, or any time for that matter! In addition to the two main cottages there is also an efficiency located next to the cottage on top of the hill. It has electricity, a refrigerator, running water, deluxe futon sleeper sofa, satillite TV, and 1/2 bath. No bathing facilities. Nearby both cottages is a beautiful pond that we built and have kept stocked for over a decade. Needless to say, if you enjoy fishing you'll love this pond. The pond is spring-fed and holds catfish, bass, bluegill, carp, and one koi (Japanese goldfish). If your lucky you can see the koi as it approaches the surface to feed. The date the record for largest catfish caught by a guest is 7 1/2lbs in June, 2003. Again, this retreat is a place to find peace and quiet. It is an escape for all those in need of one. We hope that you will come and stay with us to experience all that Hisel Valley Retreat has to offer. January 2009 new rates take effect.
